Sandycove Challenge

Event Details

Sandycove Island Challenge is an annual open water sea swimming race around Sandycove Island, Kinsale, Co. Cork. It is organised and run by Cork Lions Club with the assistance of voluntary helpers in aid of local charities. The voluntary helpers will include members of Cork Masters Swimming Club.

Sandycove Island is one of the world’s top ten open water swimming locations

In excess of 250 swimmers are expected in 2022. The event is open to all competent sea swimmers. Swim Ireland Membership is not required.

The organiser recommends all swimmers to wear swim wetsuits. Only those who are acclimated and competent open water sea swimmers should consider swimming in togs.

All swimmers must register, between 12.30pm and  3.30pm, on the day of the swim at Hamlets Bar in Kinsale

Some notes: 


  • Race Day is 10th September, 2022
  • 5:00pm Race Start
  • 1,800 meter swim around Sandycove Island
  • After gathering in Kinsale
  • 6 trophies to be won for male and female in togs, wetsuit and masters categories.
  • Medals for winners in age group categories

Refund Policy

IMPORTANT NOTE: THERE WILL BE NO REFUNDS OF ENTRY FEES.  CONSIDER THEM DONATIONS TO CHARITY

IF YOU ENTER AND CAN NOT ATTEND, YOUR FEE WILL BE DONATED TO CHARITY.  YOU CAN NOT TRANSFER YOUR ENTRY TO ANOTHER PERSON.

IF IT IS NECESSARY TO POSTPONE DUE TO SAFETY ISSUES, ENTRY FEES FOR THE FIRST DATE WILL BE TRANSFERRED TO THE PLANNED BACK UP DATE.  IF YOU CAN NOT ATTEND THE SECOND DATE, YOUR FEE WILL BE DONATED TO CHARITY

IF THE SECOND DATE DOES NOT PROCEED DUE TO SAFETY ISSUES ALL FEES WILL BE PAID OVER TO CHARITY AS A DONATION. A THIRD PLANNED DATE WILL NOT BE ATTEMPTED.
